Privacy Policy
Last updated 8 October 2026
Salone Australia ("we", "us") is a community information service for Sierra Leoneans and friends across Australia. We handle personal information under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the 13 Australian Privacy Principles, which apply in every state and territory, including the external territories. This policy covers the website and any mobile app. By using the service or sending us a submission, you agree to it.
What we collect
- Submissions: listing details you send (events, jobs, businesses, notices), including names, places, dates, prices, links, images and contact details you choose to include.
- Submitter details: your stated relationship to the listing and any contact information you give for verification.
- Technical information: device type, operating system, browser or app version, approximate location derived from network data, pages viewed, referring links, crash reports and timestamps. A hashed network identifier is kept for spam and abuse prevention.
- Usage information: searches, filters, regions and categories used, and actions such as sharing or adding to calendar.
- Device storage: small items saved on your device (for example, that you accepted these terms, your chosen area, and whether you've seen the welcome screen). We do not use advertising trackers.
We do not offer visitor accounts. We do not ask for sensitive information (such as health, religion or ethnicity). Please don't include it in submissions. The service is not directed to children under 16.
How we use it
- To review, verify, edit, publish, correct and remove listings.
- To contact you about your submission.
- To prevent spam, fraud, abuse and security incidents.
- To operate, measure and improve the service.
- To produce aggregated, de-identified insights (for example, category trends, regional demand, audience reach) that we may use, publish, or share or license to partners, sponsors and community organisations.
- To comply with law and to protect our rights, users and the community.
We will only send you marketing messages with your consent, and every message will include a way to opt out (Spam Act 2003 (Cth)).
What becomes public
Only listing details approved by our moderators are published. Contact details you place in a listing (for example, a business phone or ticket link) will be public. Your private submitter details, moderation notes and technical records are never published.
Sharing
We never sell your personal information. We may share it with service providers that host and run the service (for example, hosting, database, analytics, messaging and app store providers), with professional advisers, where required by law or a lawful request, to protect safety or prevent harm, or as part of a merger, sale or restructure of the service. Aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably identify you is not personal information and may be used or shared commercially.
Overseas storage
Some providers may store or process information outside Australia (for example, in the United States, Europe or Asia). We take reasonable steps so they handle it consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.
Storage, security and data breaches
We take reasonable steps to protect information from misuse, loss and unauthorised access, including access controls restricted to our moderation team. No online service is completely secure. If a breach is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify affected people and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme. We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes above or as required by law, then delete or de-identify it.
Your choices
You may use the service without giving us your name. You may ask to access or correct your personal information, or ask us to remove a listing or details about you. Use "Suggest an edit" on any listing or contact the team through the Add page. We may need to verify your identity and will respond within 30 days. If you are unhappy with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au, 1300 363 992).
App store privacy details
If you install Salone Australia as an app (Apple App Store or Google Play), the information practices are the same as described above. For store privacy labels and data-safety forms, the honest summary is:
- Data linked to you: only the contact details you choose to give when you send a submission, used to review and publish that submission.
- Data not linked to you: de-identified usage and technical information (pages viewed, device type, crash reports) used for app functionality, analytics and improving the service.
- Tracking: we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and we do not use advertising identifiers.
- Accounts: the app has no visitor accounts, so there is no account data to delete; you can ask us to remove submission details as described in "Your choices".
- Precise location, contacts, photos and files: not collected. Listings use suburb-level localities only.
If our practices change, we will update this policy and the store declarations to match before the change takes effect.
Changes
We may update this policy. The date above shows the latest version; continued use means you accept the update.
